Why I am Pink Cupcake...

When it came to choosing a pseudonym for blogging, Lovely Lawyer Husband instructed me that I must rail against my sometimes negative tendencies and pick something postive and bubbly. So I began pondering possible jolly names but didn't really get anywhere...until I received an e-mail from my Wonderfully Chic French Friend which began 'My dearest Pink Cupcake', and I thought, why not?!?

The name stemmed simply from the fact that I once took her a box of pink cupcakes to cheer her up whilst she worked through the final revisions of her Masters dissertation, and she's used it when writing to me ever since! Actually, I'm quite lucky that I am Pink Cupcake and not Pink Puddle - which was the name she gave to another friend who had had a cuddly pink poodle toy since childhood, because we never could quite get across the language barrier of differentiating between a puddle and a poodle in English :)

Actually, it's a such shame that Wonderfully Chic French Friend doesn't have a blog (if she does I don't know about it), as her flowery and extremely creative use of language would be such fun to read. She is the only person I know who can appear elegant and poised when using the language of fairy tales in serious conversations. This is partly why she is so Wonderfully Chic, the other reason being that she always looks amazing, whatever the occasion. I have lost count of the amount of times she's looked as though she's decked out in haute couture, and has then informed me that she stumbled across her outfit at the local Oxfam second-hand store for just a couple of pounds. I would be monumentally jealous, but to top all of this sophistication off, she's just the most sweet and kind person and, of course, the one who will forever be responsible for my Pink Cupcakedness...

Sleepy blogging...

Too tired to blog. Recently I've been having a lot of trouble with insomnia coupled with really vivid dreams which wake me up when I finally get to sleep, so, all in all, I'm completely exhausted and feeling a little grizzly. I normally wouldn't write when I'm this vacant, but I figured that as it's only Day 2 of the blog I ought to keep momentum going, if only for a sentence or two.

Despite the sleepness night, Lovely Lawyer Husband and I made an early morning home improvement pilgrimage to IKEA, but I'll blog more on this when I'm awake. Yes, I realise that an IKEA outing may not be riveting stuff to most people, but I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IKEA and can't possibly do justice the the wonders of Swedish domesticity (and in-store cuisine) right now...So for now I'll sip a glass of wine whilst LLH tries to keep my interest in the cricket match on TV. Hopefully I'll soon be in a restful slumber.....Good night!

Small beginnings...

Well, I've been 'getting around' to starting a blog for two months and have over-deliberated and procrastinated at every stage...What to call the blog? Whether to be anonymous or not? If so, what to call myself? What template to pick? Whether I will ever figure out html? How to create a blogroll? How to insert links? Arrrggghh. But given that one of the aims of this blog is to enable me to regularly write about and better understand my thoughts and feelings (about my life and interests, my research, politics and anything else that takes my fancy or gets me fired up), I figured it was a case of carpe diem or die! So, here it is...no fancy names, no fancy templates, and a waffly first post...but it can only get better from here, right?

So, who am I? Well, I'm a graduate research student in Law at the Oldest University in England (OUE) and having lived in the beautiful OUE City for the past two years, I've just moved back to Sleepy Boring Village on the South Coast (near to Sleepy Boring Seaside Town...noticing the theme here??!!) where my husband and I currently live. It's great to be back living with my husband full-time (in the absence of inspiration, let's call him Lovely Lawyer Husband (LLH)), but it's a culture shock to be back in the area in which I grew up (and pretty much thought I had finally escaped from!) and I miss the vibe of life and the stimulation of OUE City. Hell, I miss living somewhere where you can actually obtain a Mocha Frappuccino within an 20 mile radius? Yes, that's right, Sleepy Boring Seaside Town is sooooo boring that it doesn't even have a Starbucks, let alone cafes with wireless internet or anywhere that opens past 5pm. Grrrr! But, fear not, life will soon improve for Pink Cupcake (a future post will reveal why I chose this name) and Lovely Lawyer Husband...We're going to sell our house and move to Trendy Seaside City. Yay!

I guess that's enough for this post, except perhaps to say why I decided to start a blog...Well, in a moment of grad student angst I stumbled across some fantastic (mainly academic) blogs by Bitch PhD, Profgrrrrl, Bright Star, Jo(e), Ianqui and Russian Violets to name but a few, and over the last couple of months I've really enjoyed reading the regular posts/comments and gaining a sense of the community that exists in this corner of the blogosphere and, ummm, really just wanted to become a small part of it myself :-)

Bye for now...
